15 Things I'm Thankful For

Emergency funds really do make you feel like Superwoman. I swear.

These last few weeks have been absolutely tragic. I've spent hours upon hours reading stories about the mass shooting in Vegas, the natural disasters affecting multiple countries, and sexual assault cases that make me ill. It's hard not to be affected or impacted -- some of us much more so than others. That's why today I wanted to do something different.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I wrote about how it can't always be about money. One week after that I wrote my first blog post that had nothing really to do with finances at all. It felt good. So, I decided to do one blog post a month (the second Tuesday) about whatever-the-hell-I-want.

Rather than go off on my personal opinions about each event that has transpired (because I think the entire social media world has got that covered), I wanted to shift my focus to something more positive.

Some people may view it as selfish and some may not. However, the only thing that brings me joy and realization of my privilege in this world is gratitude.

As you (may or may not) know, we just recently celebrated Thanksgiving in Canada. It's a magical, mysterious, and unicorn-esque holiday that no one really seems to understand -- but just know that it exists.

So, here are 15 things I am thankful for

1. My health and the healthcare system in Canada

This year has been a roller-coaster of emotion for my personal physical health. I've been in and out of blood work, some terribly intrusive procedures, and was even sent in for an MRI to rule out anything further. If I lived in another country, I may not have been fortunate enough to receive this type of medical attention. Let alone afford it.

2. My beautiful family

There is not much to say here other than I feel so extremely grateful to have the support system that I do. I love each and every one of my family members, and am so excited to grow old with one another.

3. Genuine friendships (both online and offline)

I've always had my core group of girlfriends (whom I am eternally thankful for), but what I didn't realize was that I was forming some extremely special friendships in this online community. You guys are pretty special people, and the comment section of last weeks' blog post proved just that.

4. Being financially equipped to handle life's' obstacles

Okay, okay, it's super hard for me to get through one blog post without even mentioning money. I am so thankful for all of the lessons I have learned, and the current financial state that I am in. Emergency funds really do make you feel like Superwoman. I swear.

5. Canada. Just, being Canadian.

I love this country and every single thing about it. The beautiful neature, the welcoming people, and the delicious food. I know we're not all sunshine and rainbows okEH -- but we certainly try to be good and honest.

6. Feeling safe

I am thankful and realize how privileged I am to be able to freely speak about the things I am passionate about. Not everyone can say that they have the opportunity to voice their opinion without fear of repercussions, but I am hopeful that one day we will all feel safe in our communities.

7. How much I have learned about the importance of mental health

It's truly refreshing to see how many people are now vocal about their personal experiences with mental health. This year has been a tough one -- but it has also taught me that ignoring something so very important just isn't an option. Thanks to all those who have been my rocks.

8. People who share deep and personal stories on the Internet

While we're on this topic -- I am so incredibly thankful for people who are bold enough to share their stories in a public forum for all to see. Stories that just 10 years ago would have been brushed under the rug or criticized. You've made it easier for everyone else, and I'm HELLA on board with your bravery.

9. Every opportunity I have been given career wise

Nothing should ever go under-appreciated, and I worry that sometimes we forget this when it comes to our day jobs. I am super grateful for every opportunity that comes my way (right, me?).

10. Making money doing something I truly love

It's not everyday people find their passion and pursue it so wholeheartedly it becomes their second life. Writing has been a dream of mine since I first picked up an H2 pencil. Now, some people are crazy enough to pay me to do it.

11. Strangers that go out of their way to do something nice

Rare, but so so so important. We see you, strangers.

12. The most beautiful places in the world are just a flight or car ride away

Planes. Am I right? We can literally go everywhere and anywhere that we could imagine. So long as we get number 4 down first. It's pretty incredible that I was in Calgary just 7 hours ago watching the Flames game live, and now I'm in Fort McMurray watching them on TV.

13. The amount of free resources you can find online

And also the people who are willing to share their knowledge to educate others. Why does someone care about your money? I don't know, but we do. Why does someone care that you try a new workout? I don't know, but we do. Everyone is willing to share -- and that is one of the coolest parts of the Internet.

14. Each and every one of my readers

I seriously don't know why you're all still here. But BOY OH BOY, am I thankful for you. I'll keep writing for you as long as you keep reading -- so I hope you're ready for many years of awful puns and even more terrible knock knock jokes. Also, somehow I need to be ETERNALLY grateful for also being nominated for a Plutus Award. Pretty okay day that was.

15. Lastly, pumpkin pie.

Because I'm currently scarfing down a piece as I type this.

What are you thankful for this year? Let me know in the comments!
